What’s a Nurse Call System, & How Does It Work?
What is a nurse call system? A nurse call is more than just a convenient way for patients to notify a nurse that they need assistance. A nurse call is really an essential lifeline between patients and caregivers. A well-designed, smoothly-functioning nurse call serves to help improve patient experience, keep patients safer, and help to streamline the workflow of your providers.
How does a nurse call system work? Nurse call systems are an integral feature of modern care for patients. Any nurse call system will consist of at least five components: a central control console, a remote switching device for every patient or patient area, a set of lights corresponding to each station, interconnected wiring, and some low-voltage power supplies. The call can be initiated by patients (or staff) from any connected location or “station,” including bedsides, bathrooms, and showers. All nurse call systems function under this principle, but the complexity and capabilities of each individual system can vary greatly.
Common Problems with Nurse Call Systems
While some nurse call systems are relatively simple in design, most of those are now being replaced with systems that are much richer in terms of their technological capabilities and applications. At the end of the day, though, all nurse call systems are electronic systems that rely upon basic connectivity in order to work properly. To that end, one of the most common issues with a nurse call system is a broken or failed cordset at a patient bedside or other station location. Cordsets which can generate an electric arc are another potential hazard when placed in close proximity to oxygen stations. Use of a pneumatic cordset or pull cord can help to alleviate this hazard, but the tradeoff is often more limited technological capabilities with your system. Other common issues often revolve around wiring issues, circuit breaks, or other hardware or software glitches which can arise.
