More About Thermal Head Printers
Different types of printing technologies work better for certain needs and applications, but when it comes to many commercial printing needs, it’s hard to beat the reliable performance and cost-effectiveness of a thermal head printer. Thermal printers work by producing images on paper (or other designated copy) through the application of heat.
The two most common types of thermal printers are direct thermal printers and thermal transfer printers. A direct thermal printer prints directly onto the surface of the printing material without any need for additional ribbons, ink or toner. This is the most cost-effective solution for printing labels, receipts, bar codes, etc. The two main drawbacks to this system are the fact that you can typically only print in one color, and printed items are prone to fade over time.
A thermal transfer printer also uses a thermal print head, but the manner in which printing is accomplished is a bit different. The thermal head actually presses a wax-based ink ribbon (or ribbons) onto the printing surface. While this system costs a bit more to operate, it also allows for color printing, and prints are less likely to fade over time.
Common Problems & Issues with Thermal Printheads
While thermal printers are designed to produce high volumes of the reliable printed copy, the thermal printheads themselves can and will eventually fail. At the same time, a proper schedule of maintenance and service can extend the life of your printheads. Here are some common issues we see at AES:
Improper Heat Settings
If your thermal printer heat settings are too high, that will cause images to smudge and make prints appear blurry. And if the heat settings are too low, your printed images can appear weak or faded. If this is the case, your barcode scanners are likely to have trouble reading these printouts, too.
Buildup of Residue
Thermal printers generate a certain amount of dust on their own, and they can gather dirt and other residues over time as well. Without regular maintenance and cleaning, your printhead can become clogged, resulting in premature wear and early failure.
Electrostatic Discharge
Not familiar with electrostatic discharge? It’s about static buildup that comes from the thermal printing mechanism itself, particularly in very dry environments. If this static buildup isn’t controlled with some careful counter measures, the resulting electrostatic discharge can do significant damage to your thermal head.
Abrasion and Wear Issues
No thermal printhead lasts forever. If your thermal print jobs are starting to look less defined, or now feature some distinct burn lines, your printhead could need attention. Sometimes a good printhead cleaning may be all that’s required; in other cases, your thermal head may be worn to the point that it requires refurbishing or replacing. AES can provide the best solution for any of these scenarios!
