What Does a Transceiver Do, and How Does It Work?
The word “transceiver” is really just a combination of the words “transmitter” and “receiver.” A transceiver has the ability to both transmit and receive either analog signals, digital signals, or both. Transceiver boards are a common component of communication and data network cards, and are responsible for placing signals onto the network media, as well as detecting incoming signals from the connected network.
While transceiver boards are a necessary feature of network cards, they are utilized in many other types of devices as well. Chip transceivers or embedded transceivers are either inserted into a system board or are wired directly on a particular circuit board. Module transceivers, on the other hand, are external network peripherals, or can function as standalone devices. There are many varieties of transceivers, including RF transceivers, ethernet transceivers, fiber optic transceivers, wireless (WAP) transceivers, and more. In commercial and industrial environments, transceivers are found in everything from GPS systems, to POS systems, to barcode scanners, to motor controls & drives, to automated manufacturing & production, to robotics, to transportation systems, to mining operations.
